Murder Charges Filed Against Police Officers in Freddie Gray Case

On Friday morning, Baltimore’s chief prosecutor, Marilyn Mosby, announced that criminal charges would be filed against the six officers involved in Freddie Gray’s arrest and detention—and one officer will face a murder charge in his death. A warrant has been issued for the arrest of all six, who face charges including manslaughter, false imprisonment, assault, and misconduct in office.

“To the people of Baltimore and the demonstrators across America, I heard your call for ‘no justice, no peace,’ ” Mosby said. “To the youth of this city: I will seek justice on your behalf.”

Mosby called for peace during the remainder of the ongoing investigation and emphasized her commitment to transparency. She said the officers’ choices to respond to a second arrest and ignore Gray’s requests for medical help revealed a “grossly negligent manner.”

The charges stand in contrast to the lack of prosecution of officer Darren Wilson in Ferguson, Missouri, who shot and killed Michael Brown last summer, and officer Daniel Pantaleo, whose choke hold killed Eric Garner in Staten Island, New York.

Mosby took office just four months ago and is making her mark as the youngest chief prosecutor of any major American city, according to NBC News. She is a Boston native whose father, mother, and grandfather all served as police officers.
