In Part 3 of Hidden Connections, we look at the pressures families living in the slums of Dhaka, Bangladesh, face. After being forced to flee their villages when flooding and drought caused by climate change destroy their homes, they struggle to survive in Dhaka, where living costs and tuition are much higher. Many turn to arranging early marriages for their young daughters so they have fewer children to support. In the slums, 90 percent of women report being sexually harassed, and they are often blamed for it. To keep the family’s honor and to avoid rumors and gossip, parents often encourage their daughters to marry.
